Step inside Sony's uchi, sorry, home

Sony unveiled an ultra-thin TV, a rubbable laptop and an unusual tube speaker, amongst other things at its Uchi event today.

Derek loves nothing more than punching a remote location into a GPS, queuing up some music and heading out on a long drive, so it's a good thing he's in charge of CNET Australia's Car Tech channel.

There's a lot more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking
Sony's Uchi event was held in a warehouse in Alexandria, an industrial inner suburb of Sydney. Uchi means home, house or inside in Japanese, and the idea was to demonstrate how Sony's products fit into a "digital life".

The Uchi warehouse was split into a number of "rooms", however, the mural adorning the Groove room — featuring Sony's new Walkmans and headphones — made us think more of

Make me a supermodel
A model was standing alone and forlorn by the Create room, the room housing the Sony Cyber-shot T700 and the full-frame Alpha DSLR-A900. Loaded up with a battery grip, external flash and one of Sony's professional lenses, it was one heavy beast. It did prove very adept at taking all bar two of the photos that you see in this gallery — we will, however, reserve final judgement until we get our hands on a production model.

When I think about you I ...
This year has been the Year of the Netbook — low-powered and low-priced ultraportable laptops. We're fairly certain next year won't be the Year of the Strokeable laptop. This new CS-series Sony VAIO laptop responds to being stroked on its lid. Here it is turning a bright shade of oh-dear-lordy-get-the-hanky-out pink.

Does this make me look fat?
Due out before Christmas this year is the ultra-thin ZX1-series high-def TV. Measuring just 9.9mm at its thinnest, it's said to be the world's slimmest LCD TV.

I was framed your honour
The E4500 Bravias feature the same technical specs as the W4500-series but are housed within a minimalist black and white photo frame bezel.

45 hours and still going
Featuring a 2-inch screen and a choice of four colours, the new E-series Walkmans hope to stand out from the crowd, and the new iPod Nano, with its claimed 45-hour battery life.

What!? I can't hear you!
The new S-series Walkmans are not just a pretty face, beneath the shiny metal skin is a built-in noise cancelling chip. Battery life is reduced from 40 to 30 hours with it on though.

Sound fountain
With its nifty illumination and 1.85-metre height, the Sountina is certainly distinctive and different. We can vouch for its 360-degree sound, although judging the sound quality was impossible to do in a noisy warehouse environment.

Not quite Jamie Durie
Sony demonstrated its 200Hz television inside the Garden room. We're not quite sure why you'd put a TV in the garden or whether a black and white leaf print counts as a garden.

Connective fusion
Sony dedicated a corner to "connective fusion" — you know cameras talking to PlayStations talking to your wrist watch. We'll leave 'em to it but we're steering clear of Sony's interior design team — don't tell 'em but we're not sure that the bean bag belongs above the TV.
