The 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' trailer, broken down
Introducing "Rogue One," a Star Wars epic wherein another female badass kicks butt and takes names. Or maybe just steals some important stuff. Who knows?! Let's dissect the trailer and wildly speculate.
Why hello, Jyn Erso
The trailer for "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," the first in a series of Star Wars standalone spinoffs, dropped Thursday. Let's obsessively go over it shot by shot, shall we?
Jyn Erso, played by Felicity Jones ("The Theory of Everything"), seems to be our main character (whom I assume is the titular character?). Then again, this is Star Wars and there was a time when we thought Finn was going to be the main character too.
Is that the Indiana Jones ride?
I know Disney recycles, but jeez, maybe move *off* the property once in a while, guys. (Note: I am quite obviously kidding. As you can see on slide 15, this was clearly filmed in London.)
Hold on, you look like someone...
No, it's not actually Rey, but I'll be darned if Felicity Jones doesn't strongly resemble Daisy Ridley and her character.
Hiya Mon
What up Mon Mothma, long time no see. In fact, the actress playing her (Genevieve O'Reilly) was originally supposed to appear as the same character in "Revenge of the Sith," but her part was cut.
Hmm, you look familiar too
Oh, probably because that hair, that smoldering gaze and that jacket all look suuuuper reminiscent of a certain pilot whose name starts with P and ends with Dameron. (Wait, are you his dad?!? Or are you Luke Skywalker's supposed BFF Biggs Darklighter? But I hope not the second one because that means you die and who wouldn't want more Diego Luna in space?)
I, Droid
See that droid back there? I'm going to stake my claim now that that's Alan Tudyk's character. It's not the only time we see him in the trailer, but this was the best shot I could get. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Star Destroyer
My, my, what a lovely...
...Death Star
Definitely not who you think
No you guys, Ben Mendelsohn is definitely not playing Grand Moff Tarkin. Look at that outfit and that...gun? lightsaber? toy? Whoever he is, he's not friendly and the brain scans behind him seem like he's pretty sick. (I'm with CNET editor Rich Trenholm though; the only one with the cheekbones to channel Peter Cushing is Mads Mikkelsen, tbh.)
Um, where's Mads?
There are an awful lot of announced stars we have yet to see in this trailer. Could this hooded figure be one of them?
'Jyn, I am your --'
"What will you do when they catch you?" Forest Whitaker's gruff-voiced mentor-esque character asks...someone. While he sounds like Christian Bale's interpretation of a bounty hunter, who knows what character he's actually playing.
Escorts for the damned
As with most things in the trailer, we have no clue who any of these people are.
Quick! Catch the train!
Look it's "Star Wars On Ice in London!" (Specifically, the London Underground station at Canary Wharf.) Oh, and another shot of what I will now only refer to as Tudykdroid on the left.
Martial-arts star Donnie Yen ("Ip Man") kicks some Stormtrooper butt as an unnamed character. Fingers crossed he's a badass Jedi teacher showing some Force-sensitive younglings (or Jyn, I guess) the way.
Explodey things!
Yes! Needs moar 'splosions!
Still not Tarkin
But definitely cutting a supremely creepy figure in that cape there.
Cryotubes?
I so want this to be a Darth Vader glimpse. Or Palpatine. Or even another hidden big baddie that we always knew was maybe, probably, possibly there pulling the strings from behind the scenes.
POW
Jiang Wen (pictured) plays a "weapons enthusiast," and even though that's all we know, it seems safe to assume he probably just blew something up, well, that or he's about to.
AT-ATs!
What more do you need me to say? THERE ARE AT-ATS IN THIS MOVIE and that already makes it better than the other prequels.
'If you continue to fight...'
"...What will you become?" Forest Whitaker asks as we see Jyn Erso headed down a hallway. What's the implication here? Well, his stress on the word "you" seems to insinuate that he has become something unrecognizable and maybe something he doesn't like very much. Is he trying to guide Jyn toward better decisions?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Guess we have about eight months to hash it all out, speculate some and debate even more before the film opens on December 16.
