'Star Wars' helmets like you've never seen them (pictures)

While Stormtroopers might not be able to hit the broad side of a bantha barn with their blasters, their imposing uniforms still send chills down the spines and circuit boards of wanted Rebels and hiding droids. But their signature white helmets, it turns out, make the perfect artistic canvas.

Disney artists from Lucasfilm, Industrial Light & Magic, Marvel, and Pixar, as well as prominent street artists and Neff product designers, were given mini Stormtrooper helmets and asked to transform them into art. Their works can be seen at the free Star Wars Legion Art Show at the Robert Vargas Gallery in Los Angeles through May 4, Star Wars Day.

For his sculpture "Yub Nub," artist George McClements turned a helmet into a fierce tribute to Ewoks.

Artist Si Fang pays the ultimate tribute to Marvel comic book superheroes such as Captain America and Wolverine with this Stormtrooper helmet art piece called "Supertrooper." Spider-Man almost looks like he was swinging from the Death Star and unexpectedly smacked into the side of a Stormtrooper.

Artist Tom Marvelli's Stormtrooper art piece, "Comic Legacy," displays a collage of some of the most memorable characters in "Star Wars" comics, including Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader, and more.

Lucasfilm animator and comic book cover artist Kilian Plunkett changed an imperial helmet into one tasty green apple with his art piece "Granny Moff."

Legendary ILM visual-effects artist Ron Woodall converted a Stormtrooper helmet into every driver's parking nemesis -- the fire hydrant.

Woodall is best known for his work on "The Empire Strikes Back," "Return of the Jedi," "The Phantom Menace," "Attack of the Clones," "Revenge of the Sith," "Iron Man," "Star Trek: Into Darkness," and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," just to name a few.

ILM visual-effects compositor and artist Bianca Lemus created this tasty tribute to Stormtroopers. Called "Cherry," the delectable dessert sculpture topped with sprinkles looks good enough to eat.

Mercury is the Roman god of communication, commerce, thieves, and travelers. His signature winged helmet makes for a striking Stormtrooper helmet tribute in this art piece called "Mercury Trooper" by ILM visual-effects artist Jean Bolte.

Bolte is known for her work on such movies as "Willow," "Hook," "E.T.," "Jumanji," "Men in Black," "The Phantom Menace," "Attack of the Clones," "Iron Man," "Eragon," and "Pacific Rim."

This art piece grows on you. "Trooperarium" by artist Laura Donaldson makes a plant terrarium out of what feels like an abandoned Stormtrooper helmet.
