Sonim XP1300 Core (photos)

The Sonim XP1300 Core doesn't bring a lot of features and call volume could be higher, but it more than fits the bill as an exceptionally durable cell phone.

Kent was a senior managing editor at CNET News. A veteran of CNET since 2003, he reviewed the first iPhone and worked in both the London and San Francisco offices. When not working, he's planning his next vacation, walking his dog or watching planes land at the airport (yes, really).

The aren't many phones that can take a full bath. Indeed, the Sonim XP1300 Core can survive a 30-minute dunk in up 6.5 feet of water.

The XP1300 Core is heavy (6.5 ounces), but it has a wonderfully sturdy feel in the hand.

Fortunately, Sonim redesigned the navigation controls and keypad from earlier models. They're now user-friendly and comfortable.

Two screws secure the battery cover and prevent moisture from leaking in.

The XP1300 Core's twin 3.5mm headset jacks sit on the left side. The top is for a standard wired headset (good), but the bottom accommodates the proprietary charger and USB cable (bad).
