See Sony's Xperia XZ1 phone bring your face to life

Sony's Xperia XZ1 and smaller XZ1 Compact are packed with great tech but its the cameras that are most exciting. Both phones are equipped with the ability to make 3D scans of faces or objects which you can have printed out to keep on your desk. 

The 5.2-inch Xperia XZ1 and 4.6-inch XZ1 Compact both have waterproof bodies, 19-megapixel cameras and the latest Android Oreo software.

While Sony hasn't yet announced pricing, both phones will go on sale globally from September.

To start the 3D scanning process, you need to line your subject's face up with the guide on screen.

As you move around, you'll fill the on-screen face with information.

Eventually you'll be left with a full 3D render you can move around on screen.

You can set the face as a live wallpaper, making the head turn as you swipe between homescreen panels.

The scanning tech is even good enough to accurately capture hairstyles like this tight bun.

It's not just faces it can do either -- food and other objects are well within its capabilities.

You can put the 3D face of your friend into one of the various character avatars...

...that will then dance around in augmented reality when you open the camera.

The scans can be sent to any 3D printing service -- or even your own 3D printer -- to create physical copies.

Another neat trick is the fast 10 frames-per-second burst mode. The autofocus is able to track a moving object on-screen, ensuring it keeps in focus as it gets closer to -- or further away from -- the camera.

There's a 13-megapixel front-facing camera, too. 

The new face detection aims to automatically snap a shot of your friends' smile before you miss it and they start frowning again. You can then choose between the shot you took yourself, or the shot that the phone thinks looks better.

The camera has a 19-megapixel resolution.

You can take manual control over white balance and shutter speed settings.

The 5.2-inch display has a full HD (1,920x1,080-pixel) resolution.

Both XZ1 and XZ1 Compact come with the latest Android Oreo on board.

There's no physical home button on the bottom.

It charges using USB-C.

In the UK the XZ1 and XZ1 Compact will have fingerprint scanners built into the power button on the side. For some reason though, there's no fingerprint scanning on the US version of the phone. 

Both phones are waterproof, being able to survive at depths of up to 1.5-metres for up to 30 minutes. Spilled drinks or accidental dunks in the toilet are no match for these phones.

The XZ1 Compact has a fibreglass back panel.

The fingerprint scanner sits on the side -- but only in the UK. 

Like its big brother, it has a 19-megapixel camera with all the same new camera tricks.

It also charges over USB-C.

The 3D-scanning mode is found in the app drawer.

Its smaller size makes it very comfortable to hold.

The SIM card and microSD card slots pull out from this little tray. 

The front-facing camera has a super wide angle to capture all your friends in one shot. 

The display is bright enough to use outside.
