Samsung Wi-Fi oven delivers average cooking performance (pictures)
The Samsung NE58K9850WG 30-inch slide-in range has Wi-Fi, an insert that creates a double oven, and a sleek black stainless steel finish. But its performance doesn't live up to its fancy features.
The cooktop has four burners, a warming zone and a bridge that connects the two burners on the left for when you use a griddle.
The range connects to Samsung's Smart Home app so you can control some of the oven's functions from your phone. You have to press the Smart Control button to control the oven with the app, however.
This oven has Samsung's Flex Duo insert. When you put the Flex Duo in the oven, it creates two separate cooking cavities so you can cook two dishes with different temperatures simultaneously.
The Dual Door on this range lets you open just the top portion of the oven if you have the Flex Duo insert in place. You can also open the full oven door.
I baked two racks of biscuits using the convection bake mode to see how evenly the oven cooked them. The top-left picture is the sheet of biscuits that baked on a higher rack in the oven, and the bottom-left picture shows biscuits that baked on a lower rack. Overall, the biscuits were pretty even across each rack, though the top rack was noticeably darker than the bottom rack (see color renderings on the right).
When I let tomato soup simmer on low for 20 minutes on the Samsung NE58K9850WG, the soup's temperature dropped a lot lower than the 165 degrees Fahrenheit I had originally heated it to. However, losing temperature seems to be typical of electric cooktops like this Samsung.

I cooked a chicken with the Samsung's convection roast feature. Multiple temperature probes, including one that came with the range, registered the internal temperature as 165 degrees Fahrenheit. However, the chicken was underdone in the thigh area.
This roasting test also revealed a sometimes-inconvenient feature of the oven: If you use the Samsung's temperature probe and set the desired temperature you want your food to reach, the oven will automatically turn off. It's great unless you need to cook your food a little more, which would require you to turn the oven back on and set the temperature.
