Samsung Transform hands-on (photos)

CNET takes a closer look at Samsung's new Transform for Sprint.

Kent German
Kent was a senior managing editor at CNET News. A veteran of CNET since 2003, he reviewed the first iPhone and worked in both the London and San Francisco offices. When not working, he's planning his next vacation, walking his dog or watching planes land at the airport (yes, really).

Samsung Transform

Transform's touch screen, which measures 3.5 inches and shows 16 million colors, supports widgets and app shortcuts. And as one of Sprint's first handsets to support the carrier's new Sprint ID feature, it also offers extensive customization.

At the bottom of the display are three touch controls for the phone dialer, the main menu and the Sprint ID feature. Other touch controls sit below the display while the VGA camera is in the top right corner.

The Transform has a slider design that hides a full alphabetic keyboard. Though flush, the keys have a comfortable feel and you get a few shortcuts. You'll also notice arrow keys on the right side.

In the Sprint ID menu you can access the identity that you'd like to use or you can create a new one. The standard Sprint identity will sit on every phone.

It takes the phone a few seconds to switch between identities.

On this customized "golf enthusiast" identity, you can see a themed wallpaper and a local weather report.

Fortunately, the Sprint ID feature does not interfere with the standard Android menu design.

The volume rocker sits on the Transform's left side. Up top is the 3.5mm headset jack and Micro-USB port while around the other side are the camera shutter, voice dialing control, and power button.
