Samsung Omnia 2
Though the Samsung Omnia 2 has been announced for Verizon Wireless, there's been no word about an official release date or pricing. To give you an idea of what you can expect, we snapped some images of the smartphone from CTIA Fall 2009. This is the GSM version using Samsung's updated TouchWiz interface, which allows you to customize three home screen panels with various widgets.
Windows Mobile 6.5
Here is the Omnia 2 running Windows Mobile 6.5 and sporting the new Today screen. It's not clear whether Verizon's version will ship with Windows Mobile 6.1 or 6.5, but at this stage in the game, we would hope it's the latter.
Navigation controls
The Omnia 2 features a 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED touch screen, which was amazingly sharp and bright. It was also quite responsive during our brief hands-on time with the smartphone, but you do get Talk and End keys and a cube button that takes you the main menu. Verizon's version of the Omnia 2 replaces the cube button with a differently shape button.
Main menu
The main menu presents all your apps and programs. You can rearrange the apps using the edit button. In addition to the standard personal information management tools, the Omnia 2 offers an 800MHz processor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and comes in either 8GB or 16GB models with a microSD expansion slot.
Cube interface
The cube interface lets you flip through the phone's various multimedia features, such as the music and video players and games. The Android-based Samsung Behold II will also have a similar cube menu.
Smile for the camera
Speaking of multimedia, the Omnia 2 has a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and other advanced features, such as face-detection, geotagging, and a photo editor. It can also record video at 30 frames per second at a 720x480 resolution.
Plugged in
The smartphone is also equipped with a 3.5 millimeter jack so you can plug in your favorite headphones and enjoy your tunes.
Left side
On the left side, you'll find a volume rocker. The smartphone measures 4.65 inches tall by 2.36 inches wide by 0.47 inch thick.
