Samsung has taken the wraps off its new tablet in the Galaxy range -- the Tab 7.7, which will sit alongside its bigger brother the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

If you didn't guess from the name, the Galaxy Tab 7.7 will be a 7.7-inch slate, sitting in between the 4.3 inches of the Samsung Galaxy S2 smart phone and the 10.1 inches of the Tab 10.1.

Inside the Tab 7.7 is a dual-core processor clocked at either 1.2 or 1.4GHz (Samsung has told us both so far). Either way, it should be a pretty nippy little chap. Samsung also says it has 8GB of RAM, which we're almost positive must be a mistake -- that's a very good amount for a laptop, let alone a mobile device, so we expect that to be brought down to around 1GB. If it is correct though, expect this guy to deliver mind-blowing performance while multi-tasking.

The 7.7-inch screen has a Super AMOLED Plus display with a resolution of 1,280x800 pixels, which should make your videos and photos look sharp and clear as well as making small text on web pages sharp enough to read comfortably.

It's running Google's tablet-specific operating system Android Honeycomb 3.2, which uses the larger screen real-estate to better display home screen widgets and apps.

The back of the tablet is a big slab of aluminium which will help to make it fairly sturdy, so you hopefully won't need to worry too much if you have this knocking around your backpack. At only 7.8mm thick, it's very slim too so it should sit very snugly in your hand. It certainly looks much smarter than the chunky plastic on the previous 7-inch Galaxy Tab.

You also get a 3-megapixel camera on the back, as well as a 2-megapixel camera on the front for all the video-calling fun you could ever want.

The Galaxy Tab 7.7 is stacking up to be a quality piece of kit. We're looking forward to giving it a full hands-on over at Samsung's stand at IFA so we can see just how that screen looks in our hands -- as well as finding out the truth about that "8GB of RAM".

It will be available in 16, 32 and 64GB versions. There's no word on pricing or availability yet, but make sure to check back soon for all the info.
