Samsung Galaxy R talks like an Android pirate in official pics

The Samsung Galaxy R talks like a pirate but looks like a slightly smaller Samsung Galaxy S 2. It's splicing the mainbrace later this month, and we've had a parlay with it already.

Ahoy, ye scurvy dogs! Batten the Bluetooth and hoist the headphones for Samsung's latest be-lettered smart phone, the Samsung Galaxy R. Or as we like to call it, the Samsung Galaxy Arrrrrr.

You wouldn't be keel-hauled for mistaking the Galaxy R for the current captain of Samsung's fleet, the Samsung Galaxy S 2. As you can see from the gallery above, both phones sport the same squarish body and flat central home button flanked by a menu and back button.

But the Galaxy R does differ from its big brother in some ways. It has a slightly smaller 4.2-inch screen, compared to the Galaxy S 2's 4.3-inch display. They have the same 480x800-pixel resolution, though, so the Galaxy R should look pin-sharp.

Despite having a smaller screen, the Galaxy S is slightly thicker and heavier than the Galaxy S 2, although it's still amazingly thin and light. It weighs in at 131g and measures up at 67 by 126 by 9.6mm.

The extra weight is likely thanks to the metallic back, which reminds us of the brushed battery cover on the Samsung Wave 2. If it's as solid-feeling as the Wave 2, we'll be thrilled with the Galaxy R, since one drawback of Samsung's other Galaxy phones is that they tend to feel plasticky.

A 5-megapixel camera on the back shoots 720p video, while a 1.3-megapixel camera on the front handles video calling.

The Galaxy R also has a dual-core processor, although Samsung hasn't yet specified what clock speed it will run at. For storing your photos and music, there will be 8GB of built-in memory and room for up to 32GB more in the microSD memory card slot.

is Samsung's Web-based tool for controlling the Galaxy R remotely. It lets you connect to the phone through a Web browser on a computer, as long as they're both on the same Wi-Fi network. With it, you can send text messages and edit your photos, among other features.

Other software treats include voice control and an online "find my mobile" service that lets you track, ring, lock or wipe your phone remotely.

The Galaxy R is coming ashore at the end of July, so stay tuned for imminent news on prices and networks. In the meantime, check out Samsung's official mugshots in the gallery above.
