A closer look at the new Razer Blade Pro

The Razer Blade Pro brings incredibly powerful PC components to a sub-inch-thick laptop.

When his parents denied him a Super NES, he got mad. When they traded a prize Sega Genesis for a 2400 baud modem, he got even. Years of Internet shareware, eBay'd possessions and video game testing jobs after that, he joined Engadget. He helped found The Verge, and later served as Gizmodo's reviews editor. When he's not madly testing laptops, apps, virtual reality experiences, and whatever new gadget will supposedly change the world, he likes to kick back with some games, a good Nerf blaster, and a bottle of Tejava.

$3,700, £3399, or roughly AU$4,850 for a laptop? That's what you'll pay for the Razer Blade Pro, a 17.3-inch machine that crams serious components (including GeForce GTX 1080 graphics) into a 0.88-inch thick black aluminum shell.

Other than that GPU, the 17.3-inch screen is the star of the show: a 4K-resolution touchscreen with Nvidia G-Sync that displays 100 percent of the Adobe RGB color gamut. Useful for editing photos and video.

The keyboard is pretty colorful too, with each key in any shade you want -- and it's the first Razer laptop with a mechanical keyboard. They're pretty thin, and take a bit of force to press, but have a satisfying click.

On the left, a proprietary charging cable, two of the three USB 3 ports, and Killer Double Shot internet. You can use the Ethernet port and Wi-Fi at the same time for more bandwidth.

That GeForce GTX 1080 GPU and its 8GB of GDDR5X RAM aren't messing around. Here's how the laptop does in the Gears of War 4 benchmark.

Razer had to totally redo the laptop's cooling system to keep that GPU cool. There's a vapor chamber (!), twin fans, lots of heatpipes and a dynamic heat exchanger.

Here's the full-size, full depth SD card slot that Razer added, plus a USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 port for fast peripherals. It doesn't work with the Razer Core external graphics box quite yet, though you don't really need it anytime soon.

And here's the new programmable volume roller, right above the touchpad. It's smooth.

No more screen underneath the touchpad, or touchpad buttons, but the touchpad is definitely huge.

The Blade Pro has the biggest battery you can carry on an airplane (99Wh) but we don't know how long it lasts yet.

Oh, and this laptop weighs 7.8 pounds. Not necessarily all that portable, even if it's more portable than a desktop computer.
