PlayStation Vue focuses on your shows

Sony's Playstation Vue TV service launches today in New York, Chicago and Philadelphia, with more cities coming soon. The $50/month Internet TV service runs on PS3 and PS4 consoles and offers an extensive selection of features including a fresh, show-centric interface.

PS3 or PS4 required

To use Vue, you'll need an Internet-connected PS3 or PS4 console. iPad support, the only other device Sony has announced, is coming "very soon."

Lots of channels

Vue's base package is $50 per month for 60 channels. Disney, ABC and ESPN are major missing links, but most of the majors are available.

Check out how its channel selection compares to Sling TV.

Control via controller

The main way to control Vue is via your game controller. It's more ergonomic than a standard cable box remote, but requires both hands and a bit of a learning curve for some users.

PS4 allows TV remotes

PS4 users can also control the system via HDMI CEC, a protocol that allows a TV or other device to command a source via HDMI (it worked well with a Sony TV in our demo). PS3 users do not have that option.

You're Watching

The main interface of Vue isn't a channel grid. Instead, much like Netflix, it focuses on individual shows and suggestions based on stuff you've watched and tagged as a favorite.

My Shows

Once you tag a show as a favorite it appears in a list and all upcoming episodes are automatically stored in the cloud DVR up to 28 days.

Favorite channels

You can also tag specific channels for easy browsing later.

Live Now

Another horizontal bar provides quick access to "what's live now," much like a traditional grid.

Live TV also

"What's on now?" broswers will appreciate the expanded live TV view.

Search

Like many screens on Vue, search is reminiscent of the PlayStation store. Possibilities are narrowed down quickly, and a persistent history hangs out on the right.

Added!

It's easy to add any show to your favorites list directly from search results.

Fun with filters

The "Explore" filters are very powerful too, allowing you to find shows via numerous criteria including type, genre, popularity, rating, length and more.

Full DVR control

Unlike Sling TV, you can pause, rewind and fast-forward any channel or show.
