Apple iMac (24-inch, 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Winter 2009)

Here's our weekly roundup of the new products CNET reviewers liked best.

Apple iMac (24-inch, 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Winter 2009)

Editors' rating: 3.5

The good: One of, if not the, most affordable 24-inch all-in-one PCs; twice as much hard-drive space as older models; fast Nvidia graphics chip makes the iMac a capable gaming system; best-in-class multitasking performance; iLife digital media suite comes standard.

The bad: Fewer interesting hardware features compared with recent Windows-based all-in-ones.

The bottom line: Apple made a number of changes to this $1,499 iMac, but making a 24-inch screen available at this price is the most impressive. The rest of the updates are welcome, and Apple's multitasking capability remains unmatched. Provided you like your all-in-ones best as straightforward desktop computers, the iMac will meet your expectations with speed and elegance.

Apple Mac Mini (2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 120GB, Winter 2009)

Apple Mac Mini (2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 120GB, Winter 2009)

Editors' rating: 3.5

The good: Competitive Nvidia G9400M graphic chip; includes updated iLife '09 suite; energy efficient; space-saving chassis retains distinct design.

The bad: Similarly priced PCs offer increased functionality for more than $100 less; phone support only lasts 90 days from purchase.

The bottom line: While we're still impressed with the Mac Mini's ability to pack so much into a tight package, Apple can't get away from its PC competitors that offer more features for less money. If saving space and the Mac OS are dominating factors, then the new Mac Minis are a viable option, but your dollar will stretch much further with a budget Windows desktop.

Asus X83VB-X2

Asus X83VB-X2

Editors' rating: 3.5

The good: Dedicated graphics chip in a budget laptop; 4GB of RAM.

The bad: Unreadable labels on touch control buttons; smaller hard drive than similarly priced laptops.

The bottom line: Asus' X83VB-X2 is a pleasant surprise for casual gamers--a generic-looking budget 14-inch laptop with discrete graphics.

The good: Wi-Fi radio that tunes into thousands of free Internet radio stations; can access both Pandora and Sirius; uses online Reciva portal to organize your favorite stations and podcasts; stylish exterior design; fast start-up time; both WEP and WPA security supported; remote included; auxiliary input for connecting an iPod; five separate alarms.

The bad: Doesn't sound as good as last year's model.

The bottom line: The Grace GDI-IR2000 Wi-Fi radio has an exceptional feature set for the price and a stylish design, but it doesn't sound as good as its predecessor.

HP TouchSmart tx2z Tablet PC - 2.4 GHz, 400GB HD, 4GB RAM

Editors' rating: 3.5

The good: Dual-mode tablet display; fun-looking design; decent port assortment for a 12-inch laptop.

The bad: Mediocre battery life; unimpressive performance; touch-screen response lags.

The bottom line: The HP TouchSmart tx2z Tablet PC has the features, functions, and price to convert consumer laptop users to tablet users. We just wish it could live a little longer away from an outlet.

LG Versa (Verizon Wireless)

LG Versa (Verizon Wireless)

Editors' rating: 3.5

The good: The LG Versa is an attractive touch-screen handset with an animated user interface, plus it has options for additional modules. The Versa also has a full HTML browser with Flash Lite support, EV-DO, GPS, a 2.0-megapixel camera, and a music player. It comes with a QWERTY keyboard module, which doubles as a case.

The bad: The LG Versa suffers from a poor Web-browsing experience, and the screen can be sometimes unresponsive in certain applications. There is no Wi-Fi, and Visual Voice Mail has a monthly cost.

The bottom line: If you can live with the clunky Web browser, the LG Versa is a very good touch-screen phone with the added versatility of optional modules.

Roku Digital Video Player (Netflix Player)

Roku Digital Video Player (Netflix Player)

Editors' rating: 3.5

The good: Affordable $100 price tag; streams Netflix Watch Now and Amazon Video On Demand movies and TV shows to your TV; the combination of Netflix's unlimited subscription viewing (as low as $9 per month) and Amazon's pay-per-view offerings delivers a good range of viewing flexibility and choice; PC-free movie watching; simple setup; includes built-in wired and 802.11g Wi-Fi networking; works with all TVs; upgradeable firmware allows for new features, interface improvements, and bug fixes.

The bad: Though improving, the Netflix streaming library is still just a fraction of its DVD-by-mail offerings, especially when it comes to popular recent releases; the video quality of most non-HD titles doesn't come close to DVD, especially when viewed on large TVs; some titles don't appear in their original wide-screen version; no surround sound; can't manipulate Netflix queue or search Amazon library via TV screen; yet another box under the TV.

The bottom line: The one-two punch of Amazon and Netflix makes the Roku Player an enticing choice for anyone looking for a simple, convenient, and affordable alternative to cable or satellite TV.
