T-Mobile Shadow

The T-Mobile Shadow was first announced at CES 2009 and is now available through T-Mobile for $149.99 with a two-year contract.

Same name, new phone

The T-Mobile Shadow takes over for its predecessor of the same name, bringing an updated look and a couple of new features.

The Shadow's display

We weren't particularly thrilled with the Shadow's display. It's smaller at 1.6 inches and didn't look all that sharp or bright, showing just 64,000 colors at a 320x240-pixel resolution.

Small but chunky

The Shadow measures 4 inches tall by 2 inches wide by 0.6 inch deep and weighs 5.3 ounces. While it's not a big handset, it is slightly on the thicker side so might make for a tight fit in a pants pocket.

New colors

The T-Mobile Shadow will be available in two color combinations: white/mint and black/burgundy. We particularly like how the colors gradually transform on the back.

Slider design

The T-Mobile Shadow has a slider design, where you push the screen up to expose the alphanumeric keypad. The top is a bit heavy so it requires a good push, but then locks securely into place.

Shoddy dialpad

The Shadow features a 20-key SureType dialpad like the original model. While the buttons are large and easy to press, they look horrible due to the poor and uneven backlighting.

T-Mobile Shadow vs. Nokia N85

The T-Mobile Shadow shares a similar design to the Nokia N85 (right), but the N85 has a more solid build and construction.

Expandable memory

The T-Mobile Shadow offers about 98MB of available storage, and the MicroSD expansion slot can accept up to 8GB cards.

Same camera

The T-Mobile Shadow keeps the same 2-megapixel camera with video recording capabilities. There's no flash but you do get various camera options, including various quality settings and white balance controls.

Mediocre photo quality

We weren't particularly impressed by the Shadow's camera. It produced sharp pictures, but the colors weren't very accurate and had a yellowish tone to them.
