Five days with the iPhone XS and XS Max went by quickly. I tried to take a bunch of photos as I went and here are my favorites, with more photo comparisons to come. Because the XS and XS Max have the same cameras, the photos are presented together. None of these photos used flash. (This one is 2x on a butterfly with a broken wing near Chelsea Piers.)
Close up on a bunch of office marbles.
Lunch: tuna tacos at Chelsea Piers.
Night shot near Penn Station. I was curious how much light the new smart HDR allowed. Definitely more than the X.
Shot from my train window during the NJT to Penn Station commute.
CNET's Mark Licea, in maximum hair.
Mark's on our NY video team. He was my test model for Portrait Mode effects. Portrait Mode with Stage Light Mono looked OK, but I still see awkward effects.
Downtown San Francisco near Union Square, around 9:30 p.m.
Flowers near Chelsea Piers.
Found this on the staircase of a bathroom near the Frying Pan at Pier 66.
Estate sale, Montclair, New Jersey.
Another Penn Station night shot.
Also from the NJ estate sale.
These flowers had some good waterdrops.
Food truck in Montclair, NJ.
I tried shooting this glass of water at a dark bar in San Francisco. It turned out better than I expected.
San Francisco, downtown.
Another San Francisco shot.
OK, I like photos of tacos.
I tried to take a few quick Portrait Mode photos on the fly, playing with the adjustable bokeh. Me with AirPods...
Now another shot with a fully blurred background. The effect here seems forced.
Clock near Chelsea, 14th street.
I love this photo of a fly -- 2x telephoto.
Just trying a shot of the water on a gray day.
Flower, Chelsea Piers.
Full digital zoom on a Canadian goose.
A shot of the bright sky, dark interior near The Frying Pan.
Porthole, at The Frying Pan.
One of the little hallway exhibits at The Frying Pan bathroom. I wanted to see what the flashlight and the dark environment would do (the hallway was pretty dim).
Shooting up the stairs. On the iPhone X, this same shot was more blown out and overexposed at the top.
Shooting the iPhone XS Max with the iPhone XS.
Close-up of a rusty wheel.
