Panasonic's 4K Ultra HD TV does 60 frames per second (pictures)
We take a close look at Panasonic's new 4K TV, the TX-65WT600, which thanks to HDMI 2.0 can play your video in 60fps.
BERLIN -- The Panasonic Viera TX-65WT600 is the first TV to pack the new HDMI 2.0 standard, which lets it show 4K Ultra HD at 60 frames per second. It's due out in Europe and other regions before the end of the year and will cost a cool €9,000 (about $11,800 or £7,600).
You have to get very close indeed to the 65WT600's 65-inch panel before you can see any of its 3,840x2,160 pixels. The jagged edges on this Panasonic logo were barely noticeable until you got closer than 12 inches or so.
These two side by side are meant to show the staggering effect of 60fps. The one on the right is showing a Japanese football match in 30fps, the one on the left in 60fps. Even close up the difference was pretty negligible, although it's fair to say there was less blurring when players moved quickly on the left-hand set.
As it's so expensive, the 65WT600 is likely to be used more often as a professional display. Video producers can play back Ultra HD footage at 60fps via its DisplayPort 1.2a connector.
This is cute -- a little dino-diorama laid out in front of a prototype 4K camcorder, apparently playing in 60fps on the 65WT600 behind. The tiny figures looked very lifelike.
DisplayPort 1.2a is smashing news for gamers. It's supported by Nvidia, so a compatible PC will be able to pump out 60 frames of Ultra HD gaming action every second. Panasonic converted this car into a giant controller to celebrate -- the action looked superb.
A darkened room showed off the benefits of OLED screens for 4K pictures. This wildlife scene looked absolutely gobsmacking.
This is one of the features of Panasonic's latest smart TV system -- in-picture widgets showing you the weather, headlines, and other info.
Smart TV features have been added, too. Here's a tablet's photo gallery...
And here it is displayed in Ultra HD onscreen. When the image changed on the tablet, it took a second or two to appear on the TV, so it's not instant.
This set was showing off the 65WT600's intelligent frame creation mode, which here smoothed out the judder from a horizontal pan.
Panasonic's stand here in Berlin is pretty impressive. We particularly like this tree of TVs.
