The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Tuesday announced the 2010 Oscar nominations.While there were, for the first time, 10 nominees for best picture, as usual there were just three for visual effects.Not surprisingly, "Avatar" was made the cut. The film's team from Weta Digital--Joe Letteri, Stephen Rosenbaum, Richard Baneham and Andrew Jones--was one of the three nominees.
Industrial Light & Magic was the lead visual effects studio on "Star Trek." For their work, Roger Guyett, Russell Earl, Paul Kavanagh, and Burt Dalton were honored with an Oscar nomination.
Dan Kaufman, Peter Muyzers, Robert Habros, and Matt Aitken, of Image Engine, got an Oscar nomination for visual effects for "District 9."
Wes Anderson's "Fantastic Mr. Fox," starring George Clooney, Meryl Streep, and Bill Murray, was nominated for best animated feature.
"Coraline," based on Neil Gaiman's novel, earned Laika a nomination for best animated feature.
Disney's "The Princess and the Frog" was the fourth film nominated for a best animated feature Oscar.
Cartoon Salon's "The Secret of Kells" was the fifth nominee for the 2010 best animated feature Oscar.
