2009 was a good year for visual effects-heavy and animated films. On Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the Oscar nominations, including three for visual effects and five for animated feature.

While there were, for the first time, 10 nominees for best picture, as usual there were just three for visual effects.
Not surprisingly, "Avatar" was made the cut. The film's team from Weta Digital--Joe Letteri, Stephen Rosenbaum, Richard Baneham and Andrew Jones--was one of the three nominees.
