Nikon D5 is new on the inside, modestly changed on the outside (pictures)

The question is whether the small changes will throw you off when trading up from the D4s.

Lori Grunin
I've been reviewing hardware and software, devising testing methodology and handed out buying advice for what seems like forever; I'm currently absorbed by computers and gaming hardware, but previously spent many years concentrating on cameras. I've also volunteered with a cat rescue for over 15 years doing adoptions, designing marketing materials, managing volunteers and, of course, photographing cats.

Another button

The biggest difference between the front of the D5 and the D4s is the addition of a new programmable button in between the grip and the lens mount.

Focus mode

It retains the same switch for toggling between manual and autofocus.

Top controls

This is where we start to see some differences. Nikon has replaced the Mode button with the ISO sensitivity control. Not a big deal, unless your muscle memory kicks in. The top of the grip seems to be a steeper angle, and the record button has moved slightly as well.

High five!

I can't wait to see what the images look like at maximum ISO sensitivity.

Drive mode

The drive mode button is located where the ISO sensitivity control used to be, and the shooting information display is now where the microphone control was.

Network

While most of the back controls remain the same, it looks like the Fn3 button controls the wired LAN setup.

4K

Yup, there it is. Unfortunately, it can only record 4K three minutes at a time.

Connectors

The only new connection option is the switch from USB 2.0 to USB 3, essential for transferring 4K and the larger files produced by the higher resolution sensor quickly.

Slightly modified buttons

The buttons have been tweaked and the mode control is more prominent than it used to be.
