MyFord Touch cabin tech interface (photos)
Ford radically redesigned its cabin tech interface, using multiple LCDs to show vehicle data and infotainment. Called MyFord and MyFord Touch, the system uses an entirely new graphic interface.
The MyFord Touch cabin interface uses new cell phone-style directional buttons on the steering wheel spokes, along with two 4.2-inch LCDs in the instrument cluster and an 8-inch LCD in the center of the dashboard.
For the instrument cluster displays, vehicle information is on the left and audio, phone, and navigation info is on the right. With the base level MyFord system, the screen on the right migrates to the center of the dashboard, replacing the 8-inch LCD used by MyFord Touch.
The left display is user-configurable. Here it shows trip information along with bar meters for the fuel gauge and tachometer.
In this configuration, the left display shows an analog-style tachometer, along with adaptive cruise control information.
The right-side menu, operated with the steering wheel buttons or voice command, shows navigation, audio, phone, and climate. Each function area has its own background color.
As with the current generation of Sync, drivers can place calls by saying the name of someone in a paired phone's contact list. The new system displays that name and number on the right-side display.
This is the navigation screen as it appears on the MyFord Touch center, 8-inch LCD. Ford updated its maps, improving the looks considerably over the previous generation, while providing some 3D landmarks.
Point-of-interest information appears to have greater depth than previously, as this screen shows comments for restaurants.
The new look for this onscreen keyboard is much improved over the current interface. Also note the different color bars in each corner, with icons denoting audio, phone, navigation, and climate.
Ford adds HD radio to the mix, bringing in clearer sound and more data for each track. HD radio also allows song tagging, so people can save track information and search for it on the Internet later.
Ford Sync works with many MP3 players through its USB port. But this new display for music is much improved.
Ford appears to have added a means to display a contacts picture when a call comes in. We expect you have to load images through the SD Card slot, then associate them with specific numbers.
Ford says it has improved its 9-1-1 Assist feature, which automatically dials 911 through a paired Bluetooth phone if the car detects airbag deployment. Its location data, which it can automatically send to a 911 operator, has been made more accurate.
Ford will also include a Web browser with this new system, which can only be accessed when the car is in park. It complements the new Internet capabilities included in Sync.
