Verizon's wallet-friendly Droid Maxx 2 (pictures)

Priced at $384 without a contract or $16 a month for 24 months, the Motorola Droid Maxx 2 (aka: the US' version of the Moto X Play) is a mid-range, 5.5-inch handset available exclusively on Verizon.

The device measures 5.8 by 2.9 by 0.4 inches and weighs 6 ounces. Verizon offers the handset in blue and white, but its battery cover is swappable for other colors.

The phone is powered by a 1.7GHz Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor and has 16GB of internal memory with the option to expand up to 128GB. On the back is a 21-megapixel camera and the front houses a 5-megapixel shooter.

The Droid Maxx 2 has a 5.5-inch display with a 1,080p resolution and runs Android 5.1 Lollipop with a few software extras from Motorola.

With a 3,630mAh nonremovable battery, the device promises a two-day usage time. During our lab tests for continuous video playback, it lasted a solid 12.5 hours. It also charges fast with Quick Charge 2.0 technology from Qualcomm.

The handset is water resistant, but not fully submersible. So while it won't survive a full-on dunk in the pool, a few drops and splashes of water shouldn't hurt.

The phone has a bunch of apps from Verizon, Amazon and others that you can't uninstall. Preloaded apps are kind of expected with most carrier devices, and the Droid Maxx 2 has a lot -- I counted 21 apps that aren't part of Google, Motorola or the phone itself, and only four of these apps are removable.

Though it doesn't have the most powerful specs, as a midrange device the Droid Maxx 2 remains a reasonably priced and reliable handset for Verizon customers. For more information about Motorola phones, check out our reviews here.
