Unpacking Microsoft's new Surface Pro 2017 (photos)

Improved battery life means you can be more productive on the go with the new Surface Pro.

Sketching fans will love the refined Surface Pro pen -- now capable of drawing at different angles. Low angles provide for a thicker shading line, like a real pencil. 

You might not be able to tell, but the new Surface Pro is a tad lighter than the older, almost identical model.

The Surface Pro offers an improved kickstand that goes lower and allows you to easily adjust the tablet to your desired angle. 

The Surface Pro pairs with an optional fabric-like keyboard cover, similar to the material of the new Surface Laptop. 

Sadly, the Surface Pro Pen and Keyboard are not a package deal with the tablet. You'll have to buy them separately. 

The Surface Pro connects to the optional keyboard magnetically for a swift transition. 

Something to smile about: The webcam now supports Windows Hello facial recognition login.

A more flexible kickstand means the Surface Pro can now go slightly lower, down to 165 degrees compared to the previous 150 degrees.

Not exactly a change for the better: The Surface Pro Pen is now sold separately from the tablet, which wasn't the case in the past.

The new Surface Pro is not only lighter, its edges are slightly rounder for a slim, modern design. 

It's perfect to use on a desk, but navigating the new Surface Pro on your lap can get a little tricky.

It might be hard to spot the physical differences between the newer and older models of the Surface Pro, but they're there -- like the new Alcantara fabric on the keyboard and the slightly rounder edges.

The power connector is the same narrow, long plug as other Surface systems.

Most of the external elements of the Surface Pro remain the same. The design is a few years old, so the screen bezel is not as thin.

The Pen still connects magnetically to the Surface Pro for easy accessibility. 

While the Apple pencil for the iPad Pro is small and sharp, the Surface Pro stylus tip seems to feel softer. 

With an upgrade to the latest Intel CPU, the new Surface Pro offers overall better performance. 

The Surface Pen goes from 1,024 levels of pressure to 4,096 to meet all of your artistic needs.

Anticipation is now brewing for what new features could come with a future Surface Pro 5.

A solid upgrade you can't see is the move to the newer seventh-generation Intel Core processors. 

The kickstand is one area where Surface Pro beats out most other hybrids. 

In the port department, nothing's changed: The Surface Pro still has a USB 3.0 port and Mini DisplayPort, but no USB-C.

The Core m3 and Core i5 versions boast fanless design, but the Core i7 model still requires fans.
