Microsoft Surface Neo and Surface Duo: Dual-screen prototypes up close

We got up close (but no touching!) with prototypes of the two folding devices, which Microsoft announced it will release in time for the 2020 holidays. It wanted to make sure developers have plenty of time to work with the hardware so that it's ready to use out of the box. The Neo is a larger tablet and the Duo is phone-size, but Microsoft says both are to be considered full Surfaces.

The Microsoft Surface Duo features two side-by-side 5.6-inch displays that expand to an 8.3-inch device. 

The Microsoft Surface Neo is a larger tablet-sized device featuring dual 9-inch displays. There's also the option to magnetically attach a full keyboard to one display.

Both the larger tablet-sized Neo and the phone-sized Duo have two screens instead of a single folding screen. 

The Surface Neo uses the thinnest LCDs ever at 5.6mm thick.

The sleek pair will run Windows 10 X and Android, respectively, both optimized for dual-screen use. 

The dual screens are attached with 360-degree hinges.

The Surface Neo weighs just under 1.5 pounds.

Unlike the Duo, the Neo will be compatible with the Surface pen and keyboard, though they won't be included when the Surface Neo ships late next year. 

The Surface Duo is a smaller, phone-sized device.

Microsoft promises that the dual-screen setup will make users more productive than ever before.

Both devices deliver a wide range of flexible postures.

The Surface Pen magnetically attaches to the back of the Neo.

Microsoft plans to release both the Neo and Duo in time for the 2020 holiday shopping season. 

The Neo sports a kickstand attached to the back of the tablet.

The Surface Pen now has smooth rounded edges.

Opening and closing the Neo will be a smoother experience thanks to Microsoft's refined hinges.

When magnetically attached, the Surface Pen will charge on the back of the Neo tablet.

The two displays are connected by more than 60 microcoaxial cables, each thinner than a human hair, to create the interaction between the two screens. 

The Neo's two displays expand to the dimensions of a 13.1-inch display with an 8.9mm seam.

The new Surface Pen has a more ergonomic design than its predecessor. 

The Duo is small enough to fit in your pocket.
