The extra-durable Kyocera DuraXV

Available on sale for $100 ($150 full retail) with a carrier contract from Verizon, or $200 without, the Kyocera DuraXV is a rugged and water resistant feature phone with a 5-megapixel camera, expandable storage, and a 2.4-inch display.

Don't fear the next drop

Designed to military-grade specifications, the device's bottom lid is encased in thick black rubber to shield itself against drops, scuffs and scratches. That means it's protected against shock, vibration, and extreme temperatures.

Soaking up some water

The handset also satisfies IPX68 dust- and waterproof standards, so it can be submerged for 30 minutes in up to 6 feet of water.

Easy-to-press buttons

Below the display is your standard set of alphanumeric keys, which are generously sized with ample space between each key. Each key rises just above the phone's surface, giving you more tactile feedback, and helps to make pressing and typing a breeze.

The device's durability adds bulk. It weighs 5.6 ounces, and stands 4.13 inches tall, 2.15 inches wide and 0.98 inches thick.

Decent 5-megapixel shooter

The handset has a 5-megapixel camera with flash and auto-focusing capabilities. There is a variant of the phone that doesn't have a camera included, for cases that having a cameraphone is prohibited.

Sealing it up right

Before dunking the DuraXV underwater, make sure all its ports (like the one for its Micro-USB port) are properly sealed.

More than just bare-bones

All in all, the DuraXV a solid device (in both design and performance) that doesn't skimp on the features like expandable storage and a decent camera. For more info, check out more basic phones on CNET.
