Jim Marshall: Rock 'n' roll photos

Jimi Hendrix ignited his guitar and worldwide fame with his appearance at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. You can see the event as it happened on the "Monterey Pop" DVD, but it looks a lot nicer in Marshall's photos.

Jerry Garcia backstage at Woodstock, 1969. Marshall says Garcia just happened to be sitting near a Dead End sign. Nice coincidence.

Jazz great Thelonious Monk at the 1963 Monterey Jazz Festival. This shot was used on the cover of his 1964 LP, "It's Monk's Time."

The Beatles coming onto the stage at Candlestick Park, San Francisco for their last public concert, August 29, 1966. Spectacular!

This Allman Brothers photo was used for the cover of their "Live at the Fillmore East" album, but it was actually shot in Macon, Georgia.

Another awesome Hendrix photo, also taken at Monterey Pop. Marshall was just three feet away from Hendrix when he snapped the shutter on his Leica M2 camera.

Jazz legend Miles Davis in the ring in 1971 in San Francisco. He loved to box; it was a great way for the trumpet player to keep in shape.
