'Jenga building,' the tower of blocks (pictures)
Construction of this iconic skyscraper in New York's Tribeca district might now proceed after a long delay. It could be completed by spring 2016.
Block world
Designed by architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron, this 60-story skyscraper planned for 56 Leonard in New York's Tribeca district has become known as the "Jenga Building" for its unusual design.
Stack of houses
Nicknamed "the Jenga Building" after the 1980s game of wooden blocks, "the project is conceived as a stack of individual houses, where each house is unique and identifiable within the overall stack," according to the architects.
Corner space
The building will stand at the corner of Leonard and Church. It will have 145 residential units, including 10 large penthouses.
Geometry of space
The ground floor will house a small retail space, and could feature a spherical sculpture by Anish Kapoor, as well as a "vertical garden."
Rooms with a view
The residential units will have window walls up to 14 feet tall, with views of the New York skyline and surrounding rivers.
Unique spaces
Only five of the 145 apartments will be repeated, so most of the residences in the building will be unique.
