HTC Touch Pro2 for T-Mobile

The HTC Touch Pro2 is available now from T-Mobile, but the higher-end smartphone carries a bit of a hefty price tag at $349.99 with a two-year contract and qualifying data and voice plan.

Long overdue

T-Mobile never offered the HTC Touch Pro, so the carrier's customers have been stuck with the T-Mobile Wing since 2007. Needless to say, the HTC Touch Pro2 is quite a welcome addition with its brilliant and extra-large, tilting touch screen, spacious full QWERTY keyboard, and sleek TouchFlo 3D user interface.

Large and in charge

The Touch Pro2 is quite a bulky device, measuring 4.57 inches tall by 2.33 inches wide by 0.68 inch thick and weighing 6.61 ounces.

Pocket friendly? Not so much.

Because of its large size, you'll probably feel more comfortable if you carry the phone in a bag or perhaps get a belt holster.

Backside

On back, you'll find the smartphone's 3.2-megapixel camera and asymmetric speaker system with voice suppression and full duplex acoustics. One other advanced function is when you place the smartphone face down on a desk, it'll automatically activate the speakerphone if you're on a call so you can have a little impromptu conference call if you need it.

U.S. versus Europe

There are some slight design differences between the T-Mobile HTC Touch Pro2 and the unlocked European version of the smartphone. We preferred the unlocked Touch Pro2's design since the tapered edges and rounder shape made the handset more comfortable to hold. We also liked the chrome accents, but of course, style is subjective so you might think otherwise.

QWERTY keyboard

The HTC Touch Pro2 has one of the best QWERTY keyboards we've seen on a smartphone. The buttons are large with a good amount of spacing between them, so we don't think it'll give too many users any problems.

Easy as 1-2-3

With the roomy keyboard, we had no problems composing messages. The dedicated number row and app shortcuts on the bottom are also helpful.

Easy zoom

Below the display, you will find a touch-sensitive zoom bar that lets you easily zoom in/out of Web pages, photos, and the like, instead of having to tap the screen or go through menus.

Expansion slot

The left side houses a microSD expansion slot. While we appreciate having the card slot on the outside of the phone, popping off its protective cap is impossible without removing the battery cover first.

Mediocre camera

The Touch Pro2 comes equipped with a 3.2-megapixel camera, but we weren't too impressed with the photo quality. Also, there's a bit of shutter lag and we missed having a dedicated camera capture key on the side of the phone.
