The waiting game

The HTC Touch Pro2 was introduced at GSMA 2009 back in February as the replacement to the HTC Touch Pro. However, there have been no U.S. carrier announcements just yet, though T-Mobile and Sprint are rumored to be among the carriers who will offer the Windows Mobile smartphone.

Gorgeous display

The Touch Pro2 boasts a magnificent 3.6-inch WVGA touch screen with a 65,000-color output and 480x800-pixel resolution. The smartphone uses HTC's TouchFlo 3D interface, and like the HTC Touch Diamond2, you now get tabs for your calendar and stock quotes, and there's an option to add and remove tabs on the Home screen.

HTC Touch Pro2 vs. Nokia N97

Measuring 4.57 inches tall by 2.33 inches wide by 0.68 inch thick and weighing 6.61 ounces, the Touch Pro2 doesn't seem that much bigger than the Nokia N97 (4.6 inches tall by 2.1 inches wide by 0.6 inch thick; 5.29 ounces) on paper.

Bulky but solid

However, in hand, it feels noticeably heavier and thicker. It's a bit of a turn-off, but we have to give HTC credit for the smartphone's high-quality construction and design.

Not pocket friendly

Given the smartphone's larger size, it's definitely not the most pocket-friendly phone. If you want to carry it on your body, we'd suggest getting a belt holster.

Zoom bar

Like the HTC Touch Diamond2, the Touch Pro2 has a touch-sensitive zoom bar that lets you easily zoom in and out of pages rather than having to go through menus or tap the screen multiple times.

Tilting screen

Going back to the days of the AT&T Tilt, HTC brought back the tilting screen. When open, you can angle the Touch Pro2's display so it's easier to see when placed on a flat surface or while you're typing a message.

Happy thumbs

One area that benefits from the smartphone's larger size is the Touch Pro2's QWERTY keyboard, which is outstanding. The buttons are wide and there's a good amount of spacing between them, so even users with large thumbs shouldn't have many problems with it.

Same old camera

Disappointingly, the HTC Touch Pro2 didn't get an upgraded camera like the HTC Touch Diamond2. Instead, it has the same 3.2-megapixel camera as its predecessor.

Faded

Even more disappointing than the lack of an upgrade is the picture quality. Indoor shots looked washed out and weren't the sharpest.

Expandable memory

The Touch Pro2 only has 288MB RAM and 512MB ROM, which isn't much. Fortunately, there's a microSD expansion slot located behind the battery cover on the right side.
