A visual guide to installing (or uninstalling) your dishwasher
Take a closer look at the process before you break out your tools.

Check out our full guide to both installing and uninstalling your dishwasher. Step 1 for both processes: Make sure you have the right tools before you start.
Disconnect power
Before installing your dishwasher, unpack it from the box it came in. For both, disconnect the power before you start messing with any wires.
Remove the kick plate
Next, remove the kick plate. You'll need access to what's under it to both install and uninstall your dishwasher.
Water and power cables
When installing the dishwasher, find the hole for your water and power cables.
In position
Push the power cable, the water cable and the drain hose through the hole, but don't connect it yet.
Locate the junction box
Next, locate the power and water connections on the dishwasher itself. The power connection will be in a junction box like the one pictured above.
Locate the water connection
The main water connection will look like this.
Push the dishwasher into place
If the connections are on the front under the kick plate, push the dishwasher into place before connecting anything. Connect the cables to the dishwasher first if the connections are on the back of the unit. To push the dishwasher in place, tilt it back. Most units have wheels on the back corners.
Pull the pipes through
Have a friend pull the pipes through as you push the dishwasher in.
Connect the pipes
Install the water pipe to your water source (most likely under your sink). Turn your water on once it's secured and watch for leaks. Install your drain hose as well.
Find your power
Next, you'll need to connect your power cord to your dishwasher.
Connect wires
This step usually involves connecting wires. Check your dishwasher's instruction manual for specifics.
Check the power
Once the wiring is done, make sure to put everything back into the junction box before plugging in your dishwasher and turning the power back on.
Level and secure
Level the dishwasher, and put the kick plate back in place. Secure the dishwasher to your counter with mounting anchors.
Reversing the steps
When you uninstall the dishwasher, you'll reverse the process for disconnecting the power and water. Before you pull the dishwasher out, look for the anchors holding it in place and unscrew them.
Ready to go
Turn your dishwasher on and you should hear the familiar sound of water swooshing.
