Here's Ikea's brand-new smart lighting lineup
With a focus on smart lighting, expect to start seeing these new connected home offerings at the Ikea nearest you in the very near future.
Swedish mega-retailer Ikea is setting its sights on the smart home with a new lineup of connected lighting products you can control from your phone. Click through for a closer look.
Trådfri LED
At the center of the lineup is a new standard-sized Trådfri smart LED. It features a built-in ZigBee radio that'll let it sync up with your home network for automated lighting changes and full dimming control on your phone.
Region-by-region availability isn't locked in yet, but the Swedish price per bulb comes out to about $23/£18/AU$30, converted roughly.
Wireless Remote
You can also control Ikea's lights using this wireless remote accessory. Just tap to turn your lights on and off, dim them up and down, or change between color temperature sensors.
Converted roughly, the Swedish price comes out to about $17/£14/AU$22.
Starter Kit
You can also purchase a starter kit with the gateway hub that controls everything, a wireless remote, and two bulbs. The price comes out to about $85/£68/AU$112.
Phone controls
With that starter kit, you'll be able to control two lights using an app on your phone, or using that wireless remote.
Floalt panels
Ikea's also offering new app-enabled LED panels, like this 30 cm x 30 cm Floalt panel that you can mount to your wall or ceiling. The cost? About $91/£72/AU$119.
Smart grid?
You can connect multiple Floalt panels together to form a grid of smart lights on your wall.
Cabinet lights, too
You can also purchase Ikea furniture like this Bestå cabinet with app-enabled Surte LED panels built right in.
In the kitchen
Ikea's also selling cabinet doors with built-in LED panels.
Remote included
Each of those cabinet doors comes with the wireless remote.
Dimmer puck
You can also pick up a bulb that comes packaged with this wireless dimming puck. You don't need the gateway to connect the two, but you will need it if you want to sync the dimmer up with multiple lights all at once.
How's it work?
It isn't totally clear how that dimming puck works, mind you. There aren't any obvious buttons or controls on it -- all we have to go on at this point are product shots like this one.
Motion detector
Another combo is a bulb that sells with an accompanying motion detector.
Up on the wall
Stick that motion detector up on your wall, and it'll tell the bulb to turn on whenever it sees you walking into the room.
Other bulbs
There are a few other bulbs in the Trådfri lineup, including this smaller E14 bulb. There's also a clear-globed LED and a GU10 LED. All of them are expected to start hitting Ikea showfloors on March 31, though region-by-region pricing and availability are yet to be determined.
