Games for the holidays

After Thanksgiving, it's time to really get in gear and do all that gift shopping you've been putting off. Instead of reaching blindly into the games section and grabbing any old title, here are some games you can be sure your family will love. Be warned: some of these titles are graphic, and their rating should be noted; if it says M on the box, it's not meant for children.

Link is back in his latest adventure, and it may be the biggest yet. The fantasy land of Hyrule being in danger, players wielding the Master Sword and fighting evil--these aren't exactly new concepts for the series, but slashing enemies with the Wiimote and exploring one of the biggest Hyrules to date give this much-anticipated adventure an edge.

It's an alternate 1950s. WWII was put off due to alien invasion, and now you have to save the world. Sure, it's just a creative excuse to get into the same alien-blasting action we've seen dozens of times over, but as long as it's fun, who cares? (Rated M for Mature)

More alien-blasting fun, this time on the Xbox 360. Hide behind cover, think strategically, then run at the enemy with a chainsaw. It's a bloody good time. (Rated M for Mature)

Football just doesn't get old, and neither does the Madden franchise. Whether it's the breathtaking graphics of the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions or the unique control scheme of the Wii version, you can expect some great sports action.

Sam Fisher is back, and this time he's sketchier than usual. Manipulation and betrayal are added to Sam's bag of tricks, right next to the sneaking and shooting. (Rated M for Mature)

The spiny speedster is back, and he's brought friends. Sonic joins fellow hedgehogs Shadow and newcomer Silver to chase rings, right robots, and save the world. Sonic the Hedgehog is only for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, but patient Wii fans will get their own Sonic game early next year.

Is it possible to be too cute? We're not sure, but Viva Pinata is a good way to find out. This colorful, friendly game shows that pinatas are more than just candy-filled targets for sticks.

Fight for the Allies in this third installment of the beloved WWII shooter series. It's not exactly a new concept, but since when has creativity been necessary to grab a rifle and start fighting Nazis? (Rated M for Mature)

Sin City has a terrorist problem, and it's up to the Rainbow Six team to stop it. Strategy and planning meet slot machines and neon lights as you lead your commandos to victory. (Rated M for Mature)
