Extra-bizarre Apple Maps glitches (pictures)

Computer engineer Peder Norrby has collected some of the most strangely beautiful images of Apple Maps glitches he can find. In the odd world he captures, roads appear to melt and foliage to swallow buildings whole.

Tricky traffic circle

Apple famously took lots of heat last year when it launched a new Maps app with iOS 6 -- complete with some serious flaws. Photographer and computer engineer Peder Norrby collected some of the most intriguing-looking blunders he could find for a series called "iOS Maps Glitches."

Driving on this highway circle in Stockholm, Sweden, probably wouldn't be too safe, if Apple Maps is to be believed. Such odd visual glitches occur when there's a misalignment between the 3D topography and the 2D satellite images.

Surreal amusement park

The Grona Lund amusement park in Stockholm, Sweden, takes on a dreamy feel in this shot. "The glitches are essentially the computer misunderstanding the underlying geometry," Peder Norrby tells Co.Design. "It tries its best and sometimes it leads to comical, interesting, and lovely images."

Drooping road

A road in Stockholm, Sweden, looks more like a waterfall than a street in this image. Since he started collecting photos for his project, Peder Norrby says he's seen some of the flaws disappear.

Melting trees

Buildings appear to be upchucking trees in Barcelona, Spain. "I'm not trying to ridicule Apple Maps. I'm doing this because I like the images," Peder Norrby tells Co.Design.

Bizarre trees

The trees in New York's Central Park have never looked quite like this.
