Biography: Simon's passion for photography began as a teenager during high school. He is also a rock climber with 25 years of experience. After studying at TAFE and working at the Australian National University creating scientific images, Simon obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Outdoor Education at La Trobe University in 1990.
Combining his love for rock climbing and photography in 1994, Simon created Onsight Photography. Onsight allows Simon to work as a professional freelance photographer while travelling across Australia and the world.
Simon is the author of Rock Climbing in Australia and World Climbing: Images from the Edge.
Simon was awarded the King Albert Medal of Merit (2000) for "achievements in the mountain world"; the Rick White Memorial Medal (2009) for "outstanding achievement and contribution to Australian climbing"; the Society of Publishers in Asia award for Best Feature Photography (2000); Spinach Film Festival award for Best Action Photography (2005); and World Climbing: Images from the Edge was awarded Best Book — Mountain Image at the Banff Mountain Book Festival (2006).
A good photograph is one that captures some emotion or says something special. It's not enough for it to be just technically good. For me the aim is to capture both the climbing action and the landscape into the one image without compromising either. — Simon Carter
