When I'm documenting a live performance, backstage or a creative process I'm really just looking for moments that define the event. I only need to come away with one shot to be successful.
When I'm photographing a portrait, if possible, I like to try and portray the artist in a different light. Take them out of their comfort zone and try to give the viewer a previously unknown insight into the artist.
