Dyson's V4HF digital motor was  developed over the course of three years. The ten engineers working on the project wanted to create a smaller motor with enhanced performance for use in a hydrogen fuel cell.

That's because Dyson wanted to apply its cyclone filter technology to diesel fuel engines to reduce air pollution (similar to the way it filters allergens when you're cleaning your floors).
