The 12-inch Apple MacBook has some surprises under the hood

The third-generation 12-inch MacBook addresses a popular complaint -- that the flat keyboard lacks good tactile feedback -- by upgrading to the MacBook Pro's butterfly mechanism.  Read our hands-on first impressions of the new 12-inch MacBook. 

The 12-inch MacBook has now shifted to the new seventh-gen "Kaby Lake" Intel processor. 

For those looking to splurge, low-voltage Core i5 and Core i7 Y-series Intel CPUs are now available as add-on options with the 12-inch MacBook.

You can now get more RAM -- but it'll cost you. With the new 12-inch MacBook, you can upgrade from 8GB to 16GB for an extra $200. 

Despite being an inconvenience to many on earlier models, the latest 12-inch MacBook still features just a single USB-C port.

Look familiar? That's because not much has changed to the eye. The new 12-inch MacBook has retained its slim 2.03-pound body and high-res Retina display.

The included SSD storage on the new 12-inch MacBook, according to Apple, is now up to 50 percent faster. 

The keyboard may have changed, but the trackpad of the new 12-inch MacBook remains the same, and it's still pretty good. 

Some less-than-great features, like the 480p webcam, are still unchanged. 

Small MacBook, but serious speed: you might notice that the 12-inch MacBook is faster with the newest Core i5 and Core i7 CPU options, but these are still low-power chips compared to mainstream laptops. 

The 12-inch MacBook has three CPU options: The base 1.2GHz Core m3 model remains at $1,300, but the dual-core Intel Core i5 and Core i7 models will cost you $1,600 and $1,750, respectively. 

The portable and slim design is entering its third generation, and it's still the slimmest and lightest MacBook. 

With only a single USB-C port for all data, power, video and accessories, you'll still need an adapter to connect your Apple 12-inch MacBook with other USB ports. 

One key update: the butterfly mechanism under the keyboard has been updated to match the higher-quality one in the current MacBook Pro laptops. It makes for a much better typing experience.
