A pure-Bluetooth plug: Does it work? (pictures)
Despite a creative approach to the Smart Outlet, Nyrius struggles to compete in the established market.
The Nyrius Smart Plug bypasses integration systems like SmartThings or HomeKit in favor of direct connection to users' phones via Bluetooth.
Setup is quick and easy. If you've paired your phone with a Bluetooth device before, you'll have no problem connecting using the app.
The small light on the front of the matte-white plastic body indicates when the outlet is plugged in.
The Smart Outlet has one input plug for any regular home electronic device you want to retrofit to make smart.
You can manually toggle the electronics on and off using a button on the side of the Nyrius Smart Outlet.
The app interface is simple, with three basic features along the bottom of the screen: on/off, scheduling and proximity.
The app allows good flexibility for scheduling based on day, hour and minute.
The Nyrius Smart Outlet is available online for $40 now. Check out my first take on on CNET.
