2020 Chevrolet Silverado Diesel: Muscular and efficient

Later this year the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 will hit dealers offering a new diesel engine option.

The engine was developed by General Motors teams in Italy and the US specifically for pickup truck duty.

The turbocharged diesel inline six-cylinder engine is the first of its kind to power a Chevy full-size, light-duty pickup truck.

The 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine produces 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque.

All 460 pound-feet of torque is available between 1,500 and 3,000 rpm.

The diesel engine will be available in LT, RST, LTZ and High Country versions of the 2020 Silverado 1500. 

The diesel engine come bolted to a 10-speed automatic transmission in two- and four-wheel drive configurations.

Chevy says the diesel engine has a max tow rating of 9,300 pounds.

When the diesel engine for the Silverado arrives in dealers it'll carry a price premium of $2,495 over the 5.3-liter V8.

The price jump over the 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine will be $3,890 for the diesel.
