The 2019 Subaru Impreza is stable and efficient

Subaru's compact sedan is $100 more expensive than last year, but unlike key competitors, it does not offer a standard suite of driver-assistance features.

A Porsche 911 S brought Manuel Carrillo III home from the hospital after he was born, so it's no surprise his lifelong trajectory has centered on cars, leading him to a robust career creating rich automotive media for publications prior to joining CNET.

The Southern California native briefly lived in Sydney, and is proud to have developed a barely passable Aussie accent. He also serves on the board of directors of the Motor Press Guild. When not reviewing cars or nerding out on OEM premium audio, you can find manual-labor-averse Manuel doing his best to convince his closest friends to fix the very Porsche that delivered him home.

The Subaru Impreza arrives for 2019 essentially unchanged and with a $100 base price increase.

Subaru sells the Impreza as a sedan and a hatchback. There are four trims on offer, as well, with base prices ranging from $18,595 to $25,690 plus $885 for destination.

Imprezas come with only one engine option: a 2.0-liter flat four with 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque.

The most efficient Impreza is the sedan. When equipped with a CVT, it returns an EPA-estimated 28 miles per gallon city and 38 mpg highway.

The CVT hatchback returns 28/36 mpg, which is still decent for the class.

Inside, there's room for up to five occupants. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard on a 6.5-inch touchscreen, but an 8-inch unit is optional.

The sedan's trunk space is relatively small for the class at 12.3 cubic feet, but the hatchback's 55.3 cubic feet places the Impreza among the top players in the segment.

Unlike the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, the Impreza offers no standard suite of driver-assistance features.

However, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist and collision-mitigation braking are optional on all trims.
