2018 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road: A throwback SUV

As competitors such as the Nissan Pathfinder and Ford Explorer have moved onto unibody platforms, the Toyota 4Runner remains on a body-on-frame foundation.

TRD Off-Road versions of the 4Runner come standard with an electronic-locking rear differential.

A 4.0-liter V6 powers the 4Runner with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque.

All 4Runners come equipped with a five-speed automatic transmission.

With four-wheel drive, the 4Runner is estimated to return 17 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway.

The 4Runner is capable of towing 5,000 pounds.

An adaptive Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System is available as an option on the 4Runner TRD Off-Road to provide additional wheel travel off-road. In addition, the suspension system improves on road handling by reducing body roll in corners.

To visually set the 4Runner TRD Off-Road apart from other models it gets color-keyed bumpers with silver accents, hood scoop and seven-spoke alloy wheels.

The 2018 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road starts at $38,780, which includes $995 for destination.

A Crawl Control system is also standard, which is essentially a low speed off-road cruise control system.
