Korean luxury Genesis brand launches with the G90 in Detroit (pictures)
Don't call it a Hyundai; the 420-horsepower, 2017 G90 is the first model in Hyundai's new Genesis luxury brand.
The 2017 G90 sedan is the first model in Hyundai's new Genesis luxury brand.
The G90 is the successor to the Hyundai Equus large sedan.
Two engines are available under the G90's hood a V8 and a twin-turbocharged V6.
V-8 models can be had with optional full LED headlamps.
All G90 models features an eight-speed automatic transmission, putting power to either the rear wheels.
An optional H-TRAC all-wheel drive system can send up to 40 percent of torque on-demand to the front wheels.
A 5.0-liter Tau V-8 engine is the larger of the two power plants, making 420 horsepower.
The interior is well appointed with an emphasis placed on keeping the cabin quiet at speed.
The automaker's infotainment can be controlled via a control knob on the wood-trimmed center console.
We weren't able to activate the massive 12.3-inch color display to check out the infotainment.
Near the shifter, we spy a button to toggle between various drive modes. The climate control buttons look very Mercedes-Benz to my eye.
We suspect that, despite a new marquee, the Genesis infotainment will be based on the current generation Hyundai BlueLink system.
A Lexicon premium audio system showcases metallic grilles.
A 360-degree around-view camera system aids the driver in positioning the large sedan while parking.
Also available on the G90 is the Genesis Smart Sense Suite of driver aid features.
Standout ADAS features include autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection and adaptive cruise control with stop and go traffic management.
The rear seats are 12-way adjustable. Rear-seat entertainment is optional.
Rear passengers have dedicated control of their entertainment via physical controls. I hate to keep playing the "looks-like" game, but this setup reminds me a lot of Mercedes-Benz's Comand controller.
The driver's seat is 22-way adjustable and offers both heating and ventilation.
Genesis expects the G90 to compete with heavyweights the likes of the BMW 7er, Mercedes-Benz's S-Class and the Lexus LS.
In addition to the US, the G90 and the Genesis brand will roll out in China, Russia and select Middle East markets.
Pricing has not been confirmed, but we expect to lean more when the G90 hits the road later this year.
Genesis will fill its ranks with five additional models over the next five years.
Hyundai also brought along the the Vision G concept, which debuted last year and served as the inspiration for the Genesis G90.
The large sedan features a pillarless design for its side window and a curvaceous profile.
Around back, the oval-shaped taillights are a departure from previous designs by the automaker.
We can see hint of the G90's wide dashboard here in the concept.
The fixed rear console may be something that we see in a future Genesis model.
We may also yet see this fender vent appear on a more sporty Genesis model. The LED illumination, on the other hand, is purely conceptual.
The smaller mill is a 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 with a stated output of 365 horses.
