2017 Fiat 500X: Not the best, but we're still impressed

Style may be subjective, but there's no denying that the 2017 Fiat 500X is a stylish little SUV.

The jellybean-shaped SUV features Italian design that echoes that of the smaller 500 hatchback, right down to the round headlamps and bar grille.

The 500X is a much larger vehicle than the 500 with four doors, an enlarged cargo area and a taller ride height.

It's amazing how much more cohesive the 500X's design is when compared to the similarly scaled 500L.

Under the hood, most 500X models are powered by a 180 horsepower, 2.4-liter MultiAir engine, but a smaller 1.6-liter turbocharged engine making just 160 ponies is available on the base model.

Front-wheel drive is standard, but an upgrade to all-wheel drive is available. However, those looking to head offroad should consider the 500X's more rugged fraternal twin, Jeep's Renegade Trailhawk.

Around town, the performance and handling feel responsive and peppy. However, the 500X feels less impressive at highway speeds, where the limitations of its suspension and nine-speed gearbox become apparent. 

The 2017 Fiat 500X starts at $19,995, but options and packages pushed our example into the $30,000 range.

The 500X's style may not appeal to all, but the level of design is consistent and well executed, as evidenced by the cabin's rounded motif.

The dashboard materials betray the 500X's budget price and minor ergonomic inconsistencies reduced comfort during longer trips.

Uconnect dashboard tech is well-designed, but is starting to feel dated. The 500X's driver aid technology, however, feels very modern for this class.
