Uber, American Express team up to offer free Eats Pass membership

The perk is available for Platinum, Gold and Green Card members in the US.

Select American Express cardholders will get Eats Pass perks.

Uber and American Express on Monday unveiled new food delivery perks for US consumer The Platinum Card® from American Express, American Express® Gold Card and American Express® Green Card* members. Those customers now have access to a complimentary Eats Pass membership for up to 12 months.

Eats Pass, Uber Eats' $10 monthly subscription service, provides unlimited free delivery and 5% off eligible restaurant orders over $15 (taxes and service fees may apply and do not count toward order minimum). Subscribers also get free delivery on groceries over $30 in certain markets. Card members have to enroll by Dec. 31, 2021. Uber Eats Pass will auto-bill starting 12 months from initial enrollment in this offer, at then-current monthly rate.

Additionally, beginning early next year, American Express Gold Card members will get up to $120 annually in Uber Cash (up to $10 monthly) to use on Uber Eats orders or Uber rides in the US. The Gold Card must be added to the Uber app to receive the Uber Cash benefit.

Uber and American Express' announcement comes after Lyft and Grubhub earlier this month teamed up to provide their own food delivery perks and restaurant discounts. Chase also offers its own perks with DoorDash, such as free DashPass benefits for Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Chase Sapphire Preferred® cardmembers. For both of these cards, if you activate the benefit by 12/31/21, you can enjoy a minimum of one year of unlimited deliveries with a $0 delivery fee and reduced service fees on eligible orders over $12 on DoorDash and Caviar. 

These moves come as people rely more heavily on food and grocery delivery services during the COVID-19 pandemic and as ride-hailing companies see steep declines in ridership. By diversifying their offerings, companies like Uber and Lyft are likely looking for ways to remain relevant as many people stay home, as well as trying to cash in on our adjusted lifestyles.
