Credit One provides credit cards for various types of spending and credit levels. Its best offerings are its Platinum X5 Visa card and its Secured Card -- many of its other credit cards charge annual fees for lackluster rewards and perks.
All of Credit One’s credit cards carry higher-than-average annual percentage rates, so be mindful to not carry a balance from month to month. That said, some of Credit One’s cards can be rewarding and help you build or establish your credit, when used responsibly.

The Platinum X5 Visa* offers one of the highest cash-back rewards rates for eligible gas, groceries, internet, cable, satellite TV and mobile phone services -- 5% -- on the first $5,000 spent each year (then 1%). That’s a higher limit than most 5% cash-back cards, and gives you considerable breathing room if you focus your spending on a single category to maximize your return.
There’s an annual fee of $95 that can be offset if you spend at least $1,990 a year on one of the 5% rewards categories. Watch out for its high APR, though and avoid hefty interest charges by paying your balance in full each month.

The Secured Visa from Credit One* offers a way to build better credit through responsible use. You’ll need a security deposit to get started -- at least $200, depending on your creditworthiness -- which serves as your credit line. You’ll earn 1% cash back on certain purchases, like gas and groceries, and uniquely, your security deposit also earns interest as you work to better your credit, though the issuer doesn’t state the current interest rate.
You also get access to your credit score so you can keep an eye on any improvements you make through responsible use. Just be sure you’re not carrying a balance in order to avoid any costly interest charges.

With the NASCAR Amex card*, the better your credit, the less your annual fee. If you have excellent credit you may avoid an annual fee, but if not, the card will cost $39 annually. It comes with discounts on select NASCAR race tickets, parking, merchants and other race experiences.
You’ll earn an unimpressive 1% cash back on all purchases, and the rewards will automatically be added to your account as statement credits. NASCAR fans may fare better with a different rewards card though, particularly a travel card that will earn you higher rewards rates when you fly to races and other events or even a no-annual-fee card that earns a higher flat-rewards rate like the Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card.

Credit score requirements for Credit One credit cards
Credit One credit cards are available for a variety of different credit score ranges, but your range may determine your annual fee. Most of its cards are designated for people with limited credit, average credit or excellent credit.
To be counted as average credit, your FICO score would need to be at least 580. An 800 score and above is usually considered an excellent FICO score.
How does Credit One compare to other issuers?
Credit One is somewhat of a mixed bag. While it does provide credit cards for people with a good range of credit histories, including a quality secured card and a strong rewards card, its cards all carry much higher APRs than most other issuers. Credit One also charges annual fees for many cards that don’t offer decent rewards rates for additional card perks.
While it’s a good idea to not rotate a balance from month to month on any card, this advice is especially important when using a Credit One card. Its APRs are nearly as high as other issuers’ penalty APRs -- the rates charged when your payment is late or you don’t pay the full amount due.
Credit One vs. Capital One
While the two issuers share some similarities in name and logo, that’s where the likeness ends. Capital One offers better credit cards overall, though you’ll also need better credit scores to qualify for some. Its Venture travel credit card family, for example, provides a better option than Credit One’s Wander card, thanks to its additional card features. Its flat-rate rewards cards -- namely the Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card* -- will also be a better choice over the Platinum Visa card from Credit One. The only card that Capital One has a hard time keeping up with is the Platinum X5 Visa card.
Credit One vs. Discover
Discover, like Credit One, offers cards for a variety of different credit levels. It offers one of the best secured cards -- the Discover it® Secured Credit Card* -- and one of the best student cards -- the Discover it® Student Cash Back*. Discover also offers a great welcome bonus, whereas Credit One doesn’t offer a welcome bonus for most of its cards.
Discover’s travel card, however, isn’t as rewarding as the Credit One Wander card, but it is more flexible. Discover’s flagship rewards card, the Discover it® Cash Back*, also can’t really compete with the Platinum X5 Visa Card from Credit One, primarily because of its spending limit.
Discover’s APRs, however, are much lower and none of its credit cards carry an annual fee.
How to choose the right Credit One card for you
Whenever you’re looking for a credit card, you should choose one that best suits your budget and spending habits. You may also choose a card that best aligns with your personal values, like the Credit One Best Friends Credit Card.
If you choose a card with an annual fee, be sure you can offset it with the card’s rewards through your normal spending. However, considering most of Credit One’s cards offer low rewards with no welcome bonus, that might be difficult to do. We recommend browsing credit cards in the category you’re most interested in -- whether that’s secured, credit-building, rewards or travel -- from different card providers. You may find a better option outside of Credit One’s suite of cards.
Also be sure that you aren’t carrying a balance from month to month. The high APR on Credit One cards will lead to costly interest charges if you don’t pay off your statement balance in full each month.
Is Credit One the right credit card issuer for you?
You might look to Credit One if you need to build credit or want to earn rewards on a number of popular categories. However, many of its cards are bogged down by unnecessary annual fees and lower reward rates than many competitors. Credit One cards also carry higher APRs than most other cards, which can be detrimental to your finances. That said, there are a few standout cards, like the Platinum X5 Visa and the Best Friends Credit Card.
How to apply for a Credit One card?
Follow these steps to apply for a Credit One credit card:
- Choose a card that best matches your needs
- Follow the link above to be taken to a secure application
- Fill out the application with all of the required financial and personal information

FAQs
Some Credit One credit cards carry an annual fee while others don’t. Depending on the card, your credit score may also determine the size of the fee you’ll pay. For many of its cards, if you have excellent credit you won’t have an annual fee, but if you have average credit or lower, you’ll be responsible for an annual fee of $39 to $99.
The Credit One Secured Card and the Platinum Visa For Rebuilding Credit are designed to help you boost your credit score and will typically be the easiest to qualify for.
You can cancel your credit card online or by contacting your credit card issuer directly. Just be aware that canceling a credit card will likely negatively impact your credit score, as it’ll lower your total available credit and therefore your credit utilization. The total age of your credit accounts also contributes to healthy credit scores, so if it’s an older credit card, you might consider holding on to it.
