Zelda: Breath of the Wild may not release with the Nintendo Switch

While the upcoming Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild game seems incredibly expansive and immersive, that may be reason it sees a late release.

Zelda diehards may be getting impatient now that Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is expected to be delayed beyond March 2017, according to rumors.

The new Zelda game was originally set for release on the Wii U in 2015, but was delayed to give developers more time to expand it. It was finally unveiled at the E3 mega-conference in 2016.

Coupled with the fact that the game was heavily featured in the Nintendo Switch reveal trailer, this led people to believe Breath of the Wild would be released with the Switch modular gaming console in March 2017. Reports confirmed that the Nintendo Switch would get titles from big-name franchises such as Zelda within "six months" of the console's release.

Unfortunately, now the chatter suggests Zelda will arrive later than expected. Video game insider Emily Rogers published a post saying that Breath of the Wild was taking longer to finalize than anticipated, which led her to believe that the game wouldn't see the March release everyone hoped for. Although Rogers makes it clear that this is merely a rumor, Eurogamer and Laura Kate Dale of Let's Play Video Games also suggest a later release date, the former citing "sources close to Nintendo."

Missing out on a much anticipated game at launch time could be a big hit for the Nintendo Switch; sales of the console could suffer if it doesn't feature exciting titles. Nintendo was thought to be including fan favorites such as Zelda to avoid the same slow start that plagued the Wii U and 3DS, website MCV reports, but at this rate the Switch may suffer the same fate.
