Yahoo's logo is getting a new look next month, but fear not -- the iconic exclamation point is not at risk of extinction!
The Web company on Tuesday debuted the first in a series of new logos it plans to unveil in the next couple of weeks. The change was inspired by "a renewed sense of purpose and progress at Yahoo" since Marissa Mayer took over as chief executive officer a year ago, Kathy Savitt, Yahoo's chief marketing officer, wrote Tuesday evening in a Tumblr blog post.
"The new logo will be a modern redesign that's more reflective of our reimagined design and new experiences," Savitt wrote, explaining that a new variation of the logo will be presented each day during the next 30 days. "It's our way of having some fun while honoring the legacy of our present logo."
The campaign will culminate with the unveiling of a new official logo on September 5, Savitt wrote.
While the new logo is intended to reflect a new corporate personality, the company isn't exactly abandoning the visual and auditory cues it has spent the past 18 years building as part of its brand.
"We also want to preserve the character that is unique to Yahoo! -- fun, vibrant, and welcoming -- so we'll be keeping the color purple, our iconic exclamation point and of course the famous yodel," she wrote. "After all, some things never go out of style."
While logos are generally considered sacred in the corporate world due to the time and money spent supporting them, changes are not unheard of. Googlefor its recent acquisition Motorola Mobility, replacing the decades-old red button "M" for a rainbow of colors and a "Google company" tagline.
