Under the deal, Yahoo will offer Netizens direct links to related CDnow music products. CDnow also will be integrated into Yahoo's content and receive "extensive promotional" exposure throughout the search site. CDnow, among the largest online music sellers, offers more than 250,000 music-oriented products.
Last week, for example, Lycos announced a three-year e-commerce partnership with online bookseller Barnes & Noble. It came after Yahoo and Excite announced similar marketing pacts with Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble's chief competitor online.
In addition, music sites are boosting e-commerce. "Music is the fastest-growing product and purchase category on the Internet," said Jeff Mallett, senior vice president of business operations for Yahoo.
Net sales of prerecorded music are expected to reach $47 million this year, according to a study by Jupiter Communications. Another study by Iconocast predicted that nearly 100,000 music sites will launch by the year 2000, up from 32,000 now.
