Yahoo has teamed with Web site Travelocity.com to provide content for the new wireless program, which will allow travelers to book flights, rent cars and reserve hotel accommodations, as well as research trips by destination, price and interests, the company said in a statement.
The new offering is part of the Santa Clara, Calif.-based Web company's Yahoo Everywhere strategy designed to extend Yahoo services beyond the desktop to wireless devices such as cell phones and handheld computers.
"With the integration of Travelocity's wireless travel tools, Yahoo is able to provide timely and personalized information to the most mobile consumers--travelers," Anurag Mandhekar, director of Yahoo Everywhere, said in a statement.
The online travel market, which has heated up in recent months, could be worth some $16.7 billion in the United States this year, according to Forrester Research. Airline companies and Internet travel sites such as Expedia and Travelocity are squaring off to capture consumers' dollars, and the airlines have gained ground by developing their own technology and Internet services.
The new program will also allow Yahoo Travel users to communicate and share their travel experiences with other travelers using the new service.
