Xbox Play Anywhere to hit Windows 10, Xbox One on Sept. 13
This means you will be able to download a game that works on both Windows 10 and Xbox One, though the title must be one that supports the new Play Anywhere feature.
Those of you with both Windows 10 and an Xbox One will soon be able to purchase and play games that work on both.
Microsoft is due to launch Xbox Play Anywhere on September 13, a company rep told gaming blog site Polygon on Friday. The new feature offers single titles compatible with both the Windows 10 operating system and the Xbox One game console.
Gamers will need the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, which is scheduled to launch on August 2, and a related Xbox update due out this summer. The combination will allow Microsoft's Windows Store on both Windows 10 and the Xbox One to support Xbox Play Anywhere games, the Microsoft rep said.
Xbox Play Anywhere is part of Microsoft's initiative to unite its key products as a way of generating greater demand for them. The aim here is to lure consumers to both Windows 10 and the Xbox One by making it easier to work and play with the same programs on both platforms.
One key advantage is that you can start playing a game on the Xbox One and then resume where you left off on your PC with your saved game intact, or vice versa. You can also play games with Xbox owners who don't have a PC, or PC owners who don't have an Xbox.
The feature works only with downloadable software -- and just 13 titles initially, including Ark: Survival Evolved, Gears of War 4, Halo Wars 2, Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2. But Microsoft said that all future titles it produces will support Xbox Play Anywhere.
"We believe Xbox Play Anywhere will deliver greater value to gamers, who will now be able to enjoy their favorite games no matter where they are," a Microsoft spokeswoman said. "Many of these games will also support cross-play between Xbox One and Windows 10, thereby expanding the community of gamers to play with."
In related news, Microsoft is hosting an "ultimate game sale," starting Tuesday and ending July 11. The sale offers 250 deals on Xbox One and Xbox 360 titles, with savings of up to 40 percent to 60 percent off the full price.
Microsoft did not immediately respond to CNET's request for comment.
