Xbox 720: 8 CPU cores of gaming power?

The purported leaked specs of the next Xbox has Microsoft pushing a lot of processing power into the next-gen console.

The purported leaked specs of the next Xbox has Microsoft pushing a lot of processing power into the next-generation console.

When talking about the Xi3 deal with Valve last week, we noted that the current crop of gaming consoles are starting to show their age in terms of processing.

Well, if the specs for the Xbox 720 that are being shown over at VGLeaks turn out to be true, then there's a lot more gaming power coming our way.

Eight CPU cores running at 1.6GHz using x64 architecture, with a custom D3D11.1 graphics processor clocked at 800MHz. This means that at peak performance, the Xbox 720 — still known by its codename Durango — will manage 1.2 trillion floating-point operations per second, or 1.2 teraflops. That's significantly more impressive that the current Xbox which is still measured in gigaflops.

Also revealed is a Blu-ray drive, 8GB of RAM, Wi-Fi Direct capability, USB 3.0 and HDMI 1.4a.

Of course, if the other rumours regarding the PlayStation 4 are to be believed, then it's already got Durango trumped in terms of raw processing power.

The next Xbox is tipped to be revealed at E3 this year, so we've got a few months left until we see what the Redmond, Washington-based company has been cooking up over the past few years.
