World Series finale gives Cubs a social media win, too

Social Cues: Brexit and Pokemon Go are also trending across Twitter and Facebook.

The World Series finished like a champ on social media.

With a blown lead, an extra inning, a rain delay and a giddy, champagne-fueled Bill Murray, the Chicago Cubs had plenty to offer Facebook and Twitter as they eked out a long-awaited hardball victory.

Social Cues is our guide to what people are talking about across social media. Here is what's trending on Thursday morning:

Chicago Cubs: The longest championship drought in US sports history is over. The Chicago Cubs won their first World Series in 108 years, ending a century's worth of anguish. The intense Game 7 dominated social media from the get-go Wednesday night, as the Cubs and the Cleveland Indians each fought to end an enduring curse (six decades, in the case of the Indians). From the Cubs giving up a 6-3 lead to the 6-6 tie that propelled the game into extra innings, it was a heaping helping of baseball history. Fans on Facebook and Twitter surely appreciated the moment.

Brexit: There could be an escape plan from Brexit after all. The United Kingdom's high court ruled Thursday that the nation cannot leave the European Union without Parliament's approval. A controversial referendum in June had left people reeling from the unexpected outcome, which many predict will be disastrous for Britain's economy. Now, with an apparent second chance, the debate has been rekindled on Twitter. Expect intensity, as some people call on the government to stand by its citizens' decision, and others demand a fix.

Pokemon Go Update: The mobile app's latest update makes a bid to recapture some of its lost players -- and keep them playing every single day. The augmented-reality game that took the summer by storm got an update Wednesday that will give players extra experience and stardust for catching a Pokemon, increasing the portion if you keep a daily streak going. Players were speculating on Facebook about whether the update will do the trick.

Beyonce: The Bey-hive was buzzing on Facebook on Wednesday night about the singer's performance at the Country Music Association Awards with the Dixie Chicks. They performed a collaborative version of Beyonce's "Daddy Lessons" at the show's 50th anniversary in Nashville. Videos of the unexpected performance have been making the rounds across Facebook.

Trainspotting 2: Social media is chomping at the bit after a trailer for the 1996 film's sequel was revealed. The gang from Danny Boyle's "Trainspotting" is reuniting 20 years later, with a release date set for January 27, 2017. Chatter on the trailer has been trending across both Facebook and Twitter.
